steve Looking for my next travel adventure. The Continental "island-hopper" flight between Honolulu & Guam looks interesting. An entire day in a 737 jumping between small islands & atolls between HNL-GUM would make for some awesome photos during the take-offs & landings & use Guam as a launch point to Australia.

Ice Storm of 2009

Louisville, Kentucky, United States

From the journal Kentucky Ice Storm of 2009

28 January 2009 (local)
This Small Tree looks beautiful with the ice coating.

A loud noise wakes me up around 2:30am, I walk outside, everything is glazed over with ice.

The ice looks so beautiful, yet it is so dangerous.

Outside, it’s an eerie quiet as I hear the freezing rain come down, then a crack and a thud; the sky lights up to a vibrant blue. Lightning? Well, a phenomenon such as thunder snow exists. Fireworks? Not quite, the vibrant blue light is from transformers exploding as powerlines snap.

This weather system started with snow mixed with sleet the previous night with about six inches of accumulation. During the day the precipitation changed to a freezing drizzle and then to a freezing rain, which was the onslaught of the ice storm.

Freezing rain has been falling for a little over 10 hours creating an unparalleled ice storm to anything I’ve seen in many years.

The freezing rain is supposed to change back to snow soon – the question is how soon? Once we’re back to snow, we’re looking at another six inches. Ouch, just heard another crack followed by a thud, and I’m inside the house.

The State of Kentucky has declared a State of Emergency as a result of this storm. Reports from further west of here sound more akin to damage from a tornado - power poles snapped and tree debris everywhere. Lets hope this change-over to snow comes soon.
