The king of low cost carriers in the United States will start service to The Big Apple on June 28th and Beantown on August 16th.
The latest move into New York’s LaGuardia Airport is unique; LaGuardia is one of the most congested airports in the nation, a scenario the airline has avoided in the past with the use of secondary airports.
Despite LaGuardia’s congestion, one thing is certain: Southwest will drive fares down in markets where they compete with the legacy carriers.
The Dallas-based airline will offer a total of eight daily non-stop departures from LaGuardia – five daily flights to and from Chicago Midway and three daily non-stops between Baltimore/Washington International and LaGuardia.
New York’s Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said, "As families and businesses weigh every travel decision carefully, Southwest's arrival at LaGuardia isn't just a boon for New Yorkers - it makes it a lot easier for people around the country to access New York's unparalleled ideas, energy, and entrepreneurism."
Boston travelers will benefit with the new service Southwest is introducing to Boston's Logan International Airport. The low cost, all Boeing 737 operator plans to operate five daily non-stops to both Chicago Midway and Baltimore/Washington International.
Southwest has significant operations at both Chicago Midway (MDW) and Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) providing travelers with connections across the United States. From the west coast to the deep south - and points in-between - Southwest will link numerous cities to New York's LaGuardia Airport and Boston's Logan International with just one stop.
Bob Jordan, Southwest's Executive Vice President of Strategy and Planning said, "Our new Boston Logan service will complement our current presence at T. F. Green Airport in Providence and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in Manchester, New Hampshire. People in the central Boston area have been asking for Southwest Airlines service for many years, and we can't wait to introduce them to our legendary Customer Service, as well as our low fares, on-time flights, and no hidden fees."
As part of the expanded New England service, Providence and Manchester Customers can fly to Chicago Midway and Baltimore/Washington International for the same fares offered for the new Boston Logan service.
Fares for the new flights from New York’s LaGuardia and Boston start as low as $49 one-way to Baltimore Washington International and $89 one-way to Chicago Midway.
Southwest Airlines will operate from Gate B4 in LaGuardia's Central Terminal and from gates E1A and E1B in Terminal E at Boston Logan.
