A Turkish Airlines passenger jet carrying more than 130 people has crashed into a field while attempting to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol International Airport. The aircraft broke into three pieces on impact and early reports on survivors were confused.

Initial reports on casualties have been conflicting with the Turkish Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim claiming no lives had been lost. However witnesses at the crash scene claimed to have seen at least four body bags being carried from the wreckage of the plane.

A spokesman for Schiphol Airport administration has confirmed to reporters nine people have been killed and a further 50 injured, 25 seriously. The plane was carrying 127 passengers and 7 crew members.

The flight, TK 1951, which originated from Istanbul, Turkey, was trying to land at Schiphol AIrport when it crashed at around 10:30am local time.

At this stage there is no indications as to the cause of the accident. Weather conditions at the time of the crash included light rain, mild temperatures and 2.5 kilometers visibility.

The aircraft operated by Turkish Airlines was a Boeing 737-800, an aircraft popular throughout the world for short to medium distance flights.

Video footage from the crash scene show the aircraft broken in three pieces. The first section forward of the wing shows relatively little damage. The larger middle section including the wings can be seen pushed up against the front section while the rear tail section has been obliterated.

Most of the injured were seated towards the rear of the plane where the most damage was sustained. Most survivors were able to walk off the wreckage through the holes in the fuselage or through the emergency doors.

A passenger on the plane claimed there was no warning from the crew. The last announcement made asked passengers to fasten seatbelts for landing.

This is the first fatal accident for Turkish Airlines since a regional commuter jet crashed at a remote airfield in Turkey in 2003 killing 75 of the 80 passengers and crew.
