Tasmanian wines have been winning awards since 1848, when a white wine from New Town achieved success at the Paris Exhibition. It was cuttings from these early Tasmanian vineyards that helped establish the first vineyards in Victoria and the Barossa.
With a cool climate and a range of soil types, Tasmanian wines have a unique and diverse character. To the north of the state, you’ll find the Tamar Valley Wine Route. Take a few days to sample the standout Chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Sauvignons made from grapes that thrive in the mild northern sunshine. Join a tour and let someone else do the driving, and when the day is done you can retire to one of the charming bed and breakfasts or cosy cottages nestled amongst the vineyards.
In the south you won’t have to travel far from Hobart to find the perfect drop. Set along the banks of the region’s beautiful rivers, vineyards here enjoy prime positions in the sun and away from the wind. The countryside here is just beautiful, so you can enjoy the scenery as well as some award winning wines. Sample a table wine or a sparkling white on a romantic wine tasting sojourn into the valleys of south Tasmania’s wine growing regions.
