Though Tasmania might be known for being an island of mountains, the midlands area is quite flat and dry. That means conditions are perfect for a short cross-country glide or flying around the local area.
Soar over the gently undulating valleys hills in the central part of Tasmania. The land here is peppered with farms and agricultural properties, making a patchwork of field and paddocks spreading out under your glider. Further south, you can take off from Cambridge near Hobart to see one of the most picturesque parts of the country from the air. While places to glide are limited, the local glider pilots in Tassie are always on the lookout for new spots to hook on and hoist into the air.
The weather in Tassie can be a bit unpredictable, and can make for some interesting gliding. Even so, some have managed cross-country flights around some of flatter parts of the state. If you’re not an experienced pilot, then trying this might not be a great idea. But don’t worry! There are heaps of local pilots who are willing to take you up for a tour of the Tassie sky on a scenic joyride or a flying lesson. Take to the skies on a warm weekend and discover the pleasure of mingling with the clouds on a silent flight over Tasmania.
