Abseilers in Tasmania are spoiled for choice, with fantastic drops all across the state. Descend a stunning coastal cliff face, a steep dam wall or perhaps a majestic mountain in the wilderness. This is Australia’s most mountainous state, so don’t miss the fantastic opportunities while you’re here.

The wall of the Gordon Dam puts itself on the map as the world’s longest commercial abseiling drop. Go the whole hog at 140 metres, or you can take the easy option of 70 or 30 metre drops as well. If you want to build your courage, start out small and work your way up.

The Tasman and Freycinet Peninsulas provide some of the most stunning coastal drops you’re likely to find anywhere. The Freycinet is renowned as an area of natural beauty, while the Tasman is steeped in history. You might want to do a face first descent if you dare, since the downwards view of the sea below is absolutely spectacular.

Further inland you’ll find the mountains of Tassie hard to beat. The Organ Pipes are unmistakable as they rise 120 metres up out of the surrounding area, and are a favourite with abseiling enthusiasts. Cataract Gorge is another popular spot. Go for a short walk along the Zig Zag track before rappelling down the dolerite rock face to the water’s edge below.
