Small in size, thus known as America’s Midget, but full of scenic beauty El Salvador is full of contrasting landscapes. In this nation of many contrasts you’ll find many large city, volcanos, beaches, villages, and Mayan Ruins. Geographically, El Salvador is located between Guatemala and Honduras and has a coastline with the Pacific Ocean on the southwest.
San Salvador, the capital, is located in a valley near the base of the San Salvador volcano. You’ll find many hotels as well as restaurants, and nightlife in the Zona Rosa district of the city.
While San Salvador is the big city, take some time and explore the towns of Apaneca, Juayua, Panchimalco, and Suchitoto. In these towns you’ll notice the colonial architecture and make-up.
Surf’s Up! El Sunzal Beach on the Pacific is becoming a popular surfing destination. On the Pacific Coast there is 184 miles of coastline. Here you’ll find many hotels and resorts where you can indulge in some local seafood and get some sun.
There are a number of Environmental Reserves in El Salvador where small animals and birds are abundant. The Environmental Reserves include El Trifinio, Montecristo, El Imposible Forest, Cerro Verde Mountain Park, Walter Deininger Park and Jocotal Lagoon.
Once in the country, if you have any questions, there are 14 tourist centres you may visit for additional information. The tourist centres are located in recreational areas along the Pacific coastline, in the central mountain range, and in other areas strategically located around the country. These were built to help attract and build tourism in El Salvador.
Dive back into history and explore the spectacular Mayan Sites. In particular, San Andrés, Joya de Cerén, and Tazumal will leave you impressed.
Joya de Cerén is known as the Pompeii of Central America and the United Nations has designated the ruins here as a World Heritage Site. The main pyramid at Tazumal rises an amazing 75 feet.
The Colón is the local currency, but the US Dollar has become legal tender since 2001. You’ll find the US Dollar widely accepted and is the currency that will best get you around. Be sure to carry smaller denomination US Bank Notes with you. Credit Cards are widely accepted at major establishments.
Upon arrival at the international airport in San Salvador, automobile hires (rentals) are available. If you plan on an automobile hire, it is best you reserve in advance. Make sure you have the appropriate insurance and use care when driving, as road conditions may vary significantly.
There is also bus service connecting the major cities and you can also arrange transport through local tour companies.
The primary international airport is Comalapa International Airport, also known as El Salvador International (SAL). The airport is located just outside of San Salvador. TACA provides service to most major destinations in Central and North America and the US carriers American, Continental, Delta, and United also provide service. It’s possible to get here from most major cities in the world with just one connection through the United States or Canada.
Airport Courtesy Buses are available between the airport and hotels in Zona Rosa for approximately $10 USD. A Taxi will set you back about $18 USD.
