Biologically diverse and on the equator, Ecuador has radical geographic and climatic variations. Rain forests, jungles, mountains, islands, deserts, valleys, and snowcapped peaks can all be found in this South American nation. Did you know you could find 10% of the world’s plant species here? Geographically it borders Columbia to the north and Peru to the south and east with the mighty Pacific Ocean to the west. One of the primary attractions here are the Galapagos Islands and its marine reserve. Four regions exist here in Ecuador, the Amazon, The Highlands, The Coast, and the Galapagos Islands. Politically the country is divided into 22 provinces and the capital is Quito.

Cities of Ecuador

In addition to the capital, other important cities include Banos, Cuenca, Guayaquil, Otavalo, Riobamba, Esmeraldas, and Bahia de Caraquez. In Banos you’ll find an active volcano, Tungurahua, as well as many hot spring mineral baths. Cuenca is the 3rd largest city in Equador and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Trust Site. Otavalo is a small town north of Quito and famous for its indigenous crafts and craft market. The famous train ride down the Nariz del Diablo starts in Riobamba; the city also serves as the gateway to Mount Chimborazo. This is Ecuador’s highest mountain and its summit is the furthest point on earth from its center. Last but not least, Ecuador has many popular beaches, two of which you’ll find in Esmeraldas and Bahia de Caraquez respectively.

Otavalo will overwhelm your senses with its many colours, sounds, and smells. Every Saturday you’ll find a market packed with local artists and crafts. In the Sierra region, you’ll find many other markets in addition to Otavalo.

Important Travel Information for Ecuador

Spanish is the official language here, but you will find English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and other businesses that cater to tourists. Try to learn and speak some Spanish.

For currency, you’ll want to use the US Dollar for most transactions. Traveller’s cheques can be exchanged at some banks, but do expect a fee of about 3 percent. Some larger hotels may accept them, but don’t expect to use them elsewhere. ATM’s are available in the major cities and tourist areas, most of which are tied into the international Plus (Visa) and Cirrus (MasterCard) network. Credit Cards are accepted in upscale shops and places that cater to tourists. Keep your passport on you as it may be necessary to show ID to complete credit card transactions.

Drink only bottled water to avoid getting sick. Use common sense when it comes to eating. Watch out for pickpockets and if you have questions about safety in a particular area, inquire at your hotel.

It is best to see a medical doctor who specializes in international travel before you travel to get necessary vaccinations, which may include typhoid and yellow fever inoculation. Malaria is a problem in some coastal areas, especially during the wet season. Keep a vaccination record with you and if you take any medications, be sure they are kept in their original, properly labeled containers.

Getting to Ecuador

Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) is one of the primary international air gateways to the country. You can get here non-stop from other nations in South America. Non-stop flights from North America are available and there is also direct service from Europe.

Guayaquil’s Simon Bolivar International Airport (GYE) also has international air service from North America, Europe, and other nations in the region. Domestic connections are also available to get around the nation.

Getting around Ecuador

Ecuador’s bus system along with domestic air service is the best way to get between the major cities. Taxi’s are readily available in the major cities.
