Once considered East Pakistan, this nation was born in 1971. Located in South Asia, Bangladesh is densly populated. It shares a long border with its neighbour India and if it weren’t for a short border of 25 kilometres with Myanmar, India would be the only neighbour.

Bangladesh was the Eastern part of Pakistan after the split between India and Pakistan in 1947. The Bengalis then had a second struggle for independence with the Pakistanis, but now they have their own country. Independence from Pakistan was achieved in 1971.

Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh. It is the largest city and the fastest growing city as well. It is the best starting point for travels in the country. In the south, near the Myanmar border, Chittagong is the second largest and fastest growing city. It's one of the cleanest cities in Bangladesh and once had an ancient reputation of great mystique and beauty. It's an interesting place with tombs and mosques to visit. Just a few miles out of the city, the natural sights are outstanding.

Cox's Bazar, just south of Chittagong, is one of the world's longest natural beaches. This area has since been developed into an obvious touring spot. During the tourist season, reservations to hotels are done months in advance; otherwise the hotels closest to the shore have to get off the list. Cox's Bazar has many other attractions including Aggmeda Khyang, a large Buddhist monastery. Check out Himchari, 32km to the south where you'll find a great picnic spot which is famous for its waterfalls. Inani, also 32km south of Cox's Bazar offers sea bathing.

For some great panoramic scenery, visit Maheskhali, a small island off Cox's Bazar coast. The island has many small hills and mangrove forests. Adinath, a temple of Shiva, and a Buddhist pagoda are also located on the island. For some great handicrafts, visit the village of Ramu, about 16km from Cox's Bazar. Here you'll also find homemade cigars. Interested in watching birds and seeing wild animals? Visit nearby Teknaf, which is located by the side of the Naaf River. This also happens to be the southernmost part of Bangladesh.
