With a mailman who sold moonshine, and a publican who was also a local policeman, the history of the pub is perhaps a little chequered in South Australia. Things have changed however, and now the family friendly pub is considered to be the centre of the community in many regional parts of the state. One even took a neighbourhood vote before changing its name!
It can be a long journey between stops in the outback. South Australia’s pubs are a welcome sight for a weary traveller, where you can have a cold beer in air conditioned comfort. Many of the outback drinking holes are situated in old historic buildings, maintained for their heritage value. If you want to see them all in style, then there is only one way to do it – go on the world’s only aerial pub crawl! Taking off from Adelaide, the flight covers not only South Australia’s pubs, but goes all over the continent. If you want to do it tough you can hike along Australia’s loneliest road, the Birdsville Track. But be warned, you may be walking for a long time before you come across your first beer!
