When you think of wine in Australia, South Australia inevitably comes to mind with its rows of vineyards and rolling hills. Around about half of all wines produced in the country come from the beautiful wine growing regions that line the Riverlands of South Australia.
The Barossa Valley is at the heart of the wine growing industry in Australia. Old, low yield vines on dry land produce the rich whites, full-bodied reds and strong fortified wines that the area is famous for. Intense flavoured reds around here are known as ‘icon wines’, and are of absolute premium quality. Released as an addition to the normal range, these low yield wines are often the most sought after in the region. Stop and sample a Grenache or Mourvedre when you pass through the most famous of all wine growing regions in the country.
Visit Coonawarra and the Limestone Coast to pick up a bottle of the Cabernet the region is known for. Growing up out of the red limestone soil of the Terra Rossa, the vines of this cigar-shaped region keep getting better and better. With established labels and famous French winemakers planting here, the region is rapidly expanding and will soon include Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.
