The state of Victoria is undoubtedly the frontrunner when it comes to golf in Australia. It is home to the country’s best and most famous golf courses, and Melbourne’s sandbelt region is renowned as being the finest stretch of courses anywhere in the world.

Courses along this strip of earth are advantaged in many ways, not least of which is the sandy soil that allows for excellent drainage even when Melbourne’s rainy climate presents itself. Course aesthetics here are courtesy mostly of Scottish designer Alister MacKenzie who visited in the 1920’s, and left a marked impression on the future of golf layouts in the region.

The Mornington Peninsula is another golfing favourite. With great ocean views, the coastal terrain is perfect for links style layouts and has been compared by some to coastal areas of famous golfing country Scotland. If your score is looking a bit rough, at least you’ll be able to enjoy the view!

A far cry from the championship courses close to the city and on the coast are the fairways located amongst the regional bushland areas of the state. Carving their way through wild areas of scrub, native animals often make their homes on and around the greens. This is a great way to play a round of golf while getting up close to nature, and one of Victoria’s less well known golfing attractions.
