Clip on and prepare for adventure on the rocks of the Northern Territory. Pulling yourself up a rock in the middle of the desert can be rewarded with a relaxing swim in a waterhole, making the whole climb worth the effort.
Umbrawarra is said to be the best in the state, but you’ll need a permit before you climb. If you want the added benefit of a cooling swim after all your efforts, visit during the early to mid dry season when the water’s flowing.
Scale the red sandstone cliffs of Ormiston Gorge for a view of the desert you’ll remember forever. The most developed area in the state, Ormiston has easy access and is a favourite with the locals. Start out on the grade eight ‘Eat My Shorts’ route, and work your way up to ‘The Nose’, a slippery overhang with an apt title!
While the MacDonnell Ranges may not be world class material, they do offer some fun climbs. For easy climbing, head to Emily or Jesse gaps where you’ll find single and multi-pitch climbs with good protection. Or take the challenge of Mount Benstead Creek, the state’s most difficult climb. Unless you want to be knocked out by a rock your climbing buddy has disturbed you’d better wear a helmet, since the rock can be loose and slabby.
