The first national park ever to be declared was America’s Yellowstone. The second was Sydney’s Royal National Park. Opened in 1879, it’s a testament to the love Aussies have of ‘the bush’, part of the national heritage in Australia since the beginning. Camping, bushwalking and swimming have long been favourite pastimes, and things haven’t changed. You can still enjoy a long walk through the tall trees in a New South Wales national park, or go camping in either a designated tent zone, historical cabin or perhaps even a lighthouse!
While the natural environment is probably the first thing that springs to mind when you think of national parks, New South Wales also has some man made attractions in its parks. Many huts and cabins can be found dotted throughout the trees, and each has its own story. Also, many have ‘pleasure grounds’, which were a popular type of picnic area in the early twentieth century.
If you’re keen on getting the best out of your visit, a tour is the way to go. During spring, the New South Wales bushland comes to life with many species of colourful wildflowers, and tours are available to show you where to find them. At night time, you can go on a spotlight tour and observe the native animals in their natural habitat. Or, canoe down an estuary and observe New South Wales’ natural wonders from the water.
