Colorado, located in the western United States, is best known for the Rocky Mountains in the western half of the state with elevations exceeding 14,000 ft. The eastern half of Colorado consists of high plains with elevations ranging from 3500 ft to 7000 ft. Colorado's largest cities, Denver, followed by Colorado Springs, are located in the center of the state with the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains just to the west.
Denver, the Capital City of Colorado, is also known as The Mile High City because its elevation is one mile above sea level. Denver has much to offer with many museums, The Denver Aquarium, The Denver Mint, Six Flags Elitch Gardens (an amusement park), and shopping.
To the south of Denver is Colorado Springs with nearby Pike's Peak and the 5-star luxury Broadmoor Hotel. Colorado Springs is the home to the United States Air Force Academy and at Cheyenne Mountain, south of Pikes Peak is NORAD, North American Aerospace Defense Command.
The Rocky Mountains in Colorado has 54 peaks which exceed 14,000 feet and is well known for its ski resorts. Summit County hosts a variety of ski resorts and is just west of Denver by interstate highway I-70. Summit County is the home of Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone, and Loveland ski resorts. During the summer outdoor activities are also popular in Summit County with Lake Dillon and the White River National Forest. Other well known ski resorts in Colorado include Vail & Beaver Creek, which are further west on I-70, along with Aspen.
I-70 is the primary east-west route in Colorado, entering the state at Kansas it goes through Denver, through the Rocky Mountains, and continues into Utah at the west. I-25 runs north-south from Wyoming to New Mexico and passes through the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs.
Getting to Colorado by Air
Denver International Airport - DIA (DEN) is the largest in the state and a hub for both United Airlines and Frontier Airlines. Denver International Airport is serviced by most major US carriers. Shuttle services exist from Denver International Airport to the Ski areas in Summit County and the Vail Ski Areas.
Colorado Springs Municipal Airport (COS) is also serviced by most major US carriers.
Eagle County Airport (EGE) services the Vail Ski Area and has several seasonal flights during the ski season.
