THIS IS THE SEARCH PANEL

With its easily recognisable city scape, contemporary vibe and weather that’s as warm and welcoming as its people, Sydney has put itself on the map as one of the world’s most liveable cities. The unofficial capital of Australia has grown into a wonderfully cosmopolitan city with more entertainment, shopping and sightseeing opportunities than any other place in the country.

Spreading out over 1,580 square kilometres of earth, Sydney is now twice the area of New York, with most of its four million residents living in the suburban sprawl. Although there is still a hint of Sydney’s convict heritage in the outgoing nature of local residents, it’s also the most multicultural city in the entire Asia Pacific. People the world over are attracted to the sociable vibe of this cosmopolitan city, producing a community of open-minded, friendly and somewhat worldly people.

People living in Sydney have the advantage of being able to take for granted one the most picturesque cities in the world. Sydney Harbour Bridge is a world famous landmark, and a gateway between the banks of the harbour for locals who casually refer to it as the ‘Coat Hanger’. The Opera House is known as a great feat of architectural excellence, and is easily within sight of the 160,000 vehicles that cross the bridge each day.

Residents enjoy around 300 days of sunny weather each year. Summer months see the weather turn humid with only the odd downpour of torrential rain, and average temperatures of 25°C. It can get up to 40°C or more though, so like most Australians, you might want to find a spot close to the air-conditioner when it gets this hot. It’s never a long way to the beach though, where you’ll find crowds of Sydney-siders and tourists alike cooling off when the weather gets too warm.

The beach isn’t the only place to go on your time off. Sydney has a lively nightlife and pub culture, and the arts are alive and kicking with an outstanding network of galleries all around the city. An endless program of year round festivals will keep you entertained, as well as some big sporting events held in Sydney Olympic Park, built for the 2000 games.

If great food is what you’re after, there are a multitude of restaurants and cafes that provide edible indulgences to suit any taste or budget. Dining here reflects the multicultural nature of the people, so you can choose from almost any dish or delicacy from anywhere in the world. Shopping here is much the same, with a virtual smorgasbord of retail outlets selling everything including the kitchen sink.

When you’re new to the city, the unplanned layout of Sydney’s streets can be a bit confusing. Public transport will take you just about anywhere you want to go. The underground train loop is the fastest way to get around. The Manly Ferry is the most scenic form of public transport, and will give you a great view of the harbour. Although opinion is divided over the aesthetic value of the monorail, it is a fast way to get from the city to Darling Harbour.

With such an endearing nature and idealistic living conditions, Australia’s oldest city remains one of its favourites.
