Nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Ranges, Perth is often described as a hidden treasure – it’s leafy suburbs, bustling city, stunning beaches and easy going, friendly locals all combine to make it a popular tourist destination. The city is the most isolated capital city in the world, but doesn’t lack in facilities or attractions, offering something for every interest, need and budget.
Perth was originally home to the Nyoongar Aboriginal tribe for over 40,000 years before it was settled in 1829 by Captain Stirling and named the Swan River Settlement, a small British outpost nestled at the mouth of the Swan River. Convicts were sent to the new settlement from 1850, and built many of PerthÂ’s fine buildings which today contribute to the cityÂ’s rich heritage. Discovery of gold in WA in the 1890Â’s created a boom in population and contributed to PerthÂ’s continued growth as the major city on AustraliaÂ’s western coast.
Today, Perth is a popular tourist destination as it offers all the benefits of other major cities with the bonus of a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and is a perfect base from which to head out and explore the diverse attractions of the city and its surrounding areas.
Perth enjoys more hours of sunshine than any other capital city in Australia, and has over 50 miles of gorgeous beaches and the Swan River offering a huge variety of water-based activities. Travel less than an hour from the Perth CBD and you can be exploring the native Aussie bush, diving on a pristine reef, sampling 5 star cuisine or 4 wheel driving over sweeping sand dunes towards a perfect stretch of coastline.
Indoors, outdoors, adventure or leisure – the ‘friendly city’ has it all and more.
