Being surrounded by the sea perhaps gives the island state of Tasmania an unfair advantage when it comes to beaches. There are some beautiful shorelines here, and due to the low population of Tasmania, finding a beach without the crowds is easy. It’s one of the only places where you can watch the sun rise over the ocean on one side of the state, and watch it set on the other.
From crystal clear to deep blue, the ocean waters are a scenic beauty of Tasmania. Stroll along the white sands of the east coast and northern shores, where you’ll find plenty of places for safe swimming. A number of enchanting lagoons and rock pools also exist here, and the marine life that lives in them is just waiting to be explored. Further to the south west, you’ll find huge waves crashing onto a rugged picturesque shoreline. Many beaches here are inaccessible for swimming, but are a sight to behold.
Tasmanian shorelines are open to the Tasman Ocean, so there are some great spots for surfing. The water can be a bit cold this far towards the Antarctic though, so it’s a good idea to bring a wetsuit. The best places to go are the east and coast, and further south to Port Arthur and Hobart.
