The island state of Tasmania is surrounded by the sea, so why not take advantage of it and have an extraordinary ocean encounter? Explore the ocean realms and appreciate the wonder of the undersea kingdom.

Tasmania’s east coast is revered as one of the most beautiful shorelines in the world, and you can discover its undersea delights without even getting wet. Take a tour from Bicheno, and see all the things a diver would see from the comfort of a glass bottom boat. Explore the sheltered waters of the Gulch, where the plant life is as astounding as the sea creatures that live amongst it. Not far away you can visit a colony of Fairy Penguins, and watch the feathered creatures in their natural habitat.

Observe the grand journey of Humpbacks and Southern Rights Whales off the Tasmanian coast from September to November. You don’t even have to leave the land to see these giants of the deep rise to the surface for air, since they’re visible from the shores of the Freycinet and Tasman Peninsulas or Bruny Island.

If you really want to immerse yourself, diving is best in the warmer months. Pay a visit to one of the state’s reserves and enter the realm of starfish, rays, crayfish and sharks. One of the most enchanting diving experiences here is swimming amongst the giant kelp forests that hang like leafy pillars in the silent sea.
