Pack the fishing gear and head for one of Victoria’s rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays or beaches. Cast your line from the banks of a freshwater stream and target trout, Murray cod or golden perch. Take a boat out into the sea and you might catch snapper, tuna or kingfish.
Trout fishing is a big attraction for Victoria’s freshwater regions. Visit the Goldfields region for your chance to snag a trophy trout from a private lake, or get yourself to a fast flowing stream in the north east. The Murray cod is the state’s other enticing freshwater fish and as the name suggests it swims its way around the Murray River system. This is one of the countries most prized inland species, so make sure you use the right bait!
On the coast, you’ll find the popular fishing towns of Port Phillip and Western Port. You’re just about guaranteed to get a bite here, with consistent fishing conditions all year round. Try for whiting, garfish, salmon, flathead, gummy sharks or maybe even snapper. The snapper season really takes off in October, with fish of up to ten kilograms caught from boats or occasionally from shoreline piers.
Make a tour of it and travel the Great Ocean Road with your fishing buddies. Stop in at Lorne or Apollo bay for a chance to snag a mullet, trevally or perhaps a barracouta!
