There’s really only one thing on a fisherman’s mind when in the Northern Territory – big barramundi. The barra is Australia’s premier sports fish, and the Top End has more than its fair share of these beasts swimming around its waterways.

Anglers come from all over the world to do battle with the barras in the Northern Territory. Swimming around the warmer waters of estuaries, these fish are a real challenge since they ambush their bait and put up a real fight when they’re hooked. A weight of up to and over thirty kilograms doesn’t make it any easier, but if it were easy it would be no fun!

While barramundi dominate the fishing scene there are other fish in the sea, so to speak. Go fishing in Darwin Harbour and you won’t just catch barra, but also queenfish, bream, jewfish, snapper, Saratoga and salmon. Or you can head further out to the reef and catch Spanish Mackerel.

A visit to the fishing grounds of the Gove Peninsula is sure to please, with a number of fishing options available. Medium game fishing excursions will see you pulling in sailfish, giant trevally and queenfish while a trip to the reef offers delicious coral trout and red emperors. Take a chartered tour and find out what fishing in the Territory is all about!
