THIS IS THE SEARCH PANEL

Believe it or not, there are some places in Australia where surfing is not the ideal sport. Just about the only waves you’re going to find in the Northern Territory are heat waves. The ocean here is as flat as a fishpond for the most part, and the only time it isn’t is when there’s a cyclone. Apart from that, the water is infested with box jellyfish and crocodiles for most of the year.

If you badly want to go surfing here, you’re really going to have to really look. Out on the Gove Peninsula is the Top End's only real surf beach - Little Bondi. A good rip runs straight up the middle of the bay, forming breaks to the left and right. Just down the road is Turtle Beach, but you'll have to wait for a windy day for any decent surf. During the dry season, south-east trade winds blow in across the Gulf of Carpentaria creating small choppy waves on the far north east islands of Arnhem Land. These waves are only five foot at the most, and you’ll need a permit to get into the area. Good luck.
