The Northern Territory’s network of rivers spreads across the state, bringing life to areas of red earth and desert. Cascading falls, clear waterholes and calm rivers are a much-loved feature of national parks here, and attract a variety of native creatures. This includes salt and fresh water crocodiles that can reach huge sizes, so make sure it’s safe before you launch your vessel.
Katherine Gorge is a favourite spot for paddling around in, and you’d be hard pressed to find a more picturesque spot. Glide past sheer rock walls that rise up out of the water and through paperbark forests as you follow the river on its journey towards the Arnhem Land swamps. You might even see a freshwater croc sunning itself on the riverbanks.
The Roper River in Elsey National Park flows through waterholes and over rocks, and in the wet season develops into a raging torrent from flooding. Parts of the river contain glorious thermal pools like Rainbow Springs, surrounded by paperbark and palm forests. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a tough day’s paddling!
