While most of the Queensland coast is protected from big waves by the Great Barrier Reef, there are some spots that manage to get bombarded with the surf. And these places are worth a long drive in the combie. Or four wheel drive, as may be needed!
Fraser Island is the northernmost point you’ll find any decent surfing in the state. Surfing here is best from summer to autumn, though there are waves all year round. You will need a permit to get onto the island, and if you don’t plan on walking, you’ll also need a four wheel drive to explore the lengthy shores for the best beach breaks.
On the mainland, you’ll find that the only place to surf is in the south of the state. Further north, all you’ll find is some small chop. And you’ll have to share it with deadly box jellyfish, which is definitely not worth the risk. The Sunshine Coast has some great spots during summer and autumn. The cyclone season from December to March creates some fantastic breaks around Noosa Heads and nearby beaches. Further south again, the Gold Coast boasts some of the best surf beaches of the state. Surfer’s Paradise may be more of a commercial entity than a town these days, but it still has some great waves, especially for beginners. Burleigh Heads and Kirra Beach are famous breaks the world over, and are also cyclone season favourites.
