Though there is evidence that the Ancient Egyptians weren’t above sliding down the sand dunes on a flimsy piece of board for a cheap thrill, more recent sand boarding history began at around the time of World War Two.
Back in those days, people slid down the slopes on anything that was relatively flat and large enough to fit a grown adult on top. Early incarnations of the sand board were made from big bits of cardboard, car bonnets, old surf boards or even snow skis! These days of course, things have developed a bit and you can get purpose built sand boards to take you down the dunes. That said, if you’re really desperate there are those that still resort to using a snow board, but if you’re planning on this you’d better not mind the scratches!
Sand boarding is a growing sport in Australia with more and more people realising that, well, snow boarding sometimes just isn’t feasible in a hot country! Great beaches and sand dunes all around the coast make for perfect sand boarding conditions, but you’ll have to make sure it’s permitted before you slide since in a lot of places it is illegal. One way of making sure you’re not breaking any laws is to join an adventure tour group, who will be able to take you to best dunes and show you where to hop on and take off!
