Surfing takes up a lot of valuable time for many Australians, which is understandable given the fantastic surfing conditions! Along with that, Oz has the longest stretch of coastline of any island in the world, with great spots to be found around the east, south and west coasts. The north coast is the only place where surfing is not really the best idea since there are some not so friendly creatures in the water, and besides that, there are no waves!
But with a great range of beach, reef and rock breaks everywhere else, who cares? Many of the best spots you’ll find are close to towns that have been built up around the surfing culture for years. These places are easy to get to and if you’re a first-timer, then you might even be able to get surfing lessons!
The real attraction of Australia to serious surfers is the fact that there are still many unexplored areas where the surf is great. Because of the large stretches of beach that are uninhabited, you’ll find hidden spots in the less accessible parts of the country. Many of these are only known by a few adventurous surfers, and some have never been surfed at all. There’s really nothing like surfing the big waves out in middle of nowhere with no one around except you and a couple of your mates, so strap the boards onto the roof rack and head out to the shores of Australia.
